Calculate Bricks in Building Walls
calculate bricks in building walls is essential for all types of construction. We can’t start the project without calculating any using material. So today we will learn how to calculate bricks in the wall.
For each and every construction, we need to calculate the number of materials using for the construction. like cement, sand, aggregate, stone, brick, and water, etc. I will discuss already in my previous post the calculation of the quantity of cement, sand, and water. but today in this post will be discussing calculate bricks in building walls.
Before the construction of work, we need to estimate the quantity of the material for the construction. So in this blog, we can get knowledge about the calculation number of Bricks in a wall. If you need to know how to calculate sand, cement and water visit the blog.
I will explain simple and easy steps to calculate bricks in a wall on the wall. After seeing this article you are perfect for the calculation of brick. So guys this is very helpful to you. So let us find the quantity of brick used in wall construction.
Calculate Bricks in Building walls with the manual method
This is the manual method to determine the quantity of brick. If you want to calculate the number of bricks with the manual method you can take the brick wall without plaster. we can calculate bricks in building walls without plaster. It means minimizing the plaster thickness from the brick wall.
In this post, we will take the thickness of the wall only. This is not included plaster thickness. also, we can use the standard size of modular brick in Nepal. which is the standard size of brick as a modular brick. Visit the article if you want more information about the standard size of brick in different countries.
Mostly in the building construction 9″ or 230 mm wall should be constructed. So that today we will use 9″ or 230 mm wall. Some important points should be included below.
Some important Data to Calculate bricks in building walls
Some Important points should know before calculating the number of bricks on the wall. You must know the following points:
The standard size of a brick
Thickness of Wall
The thickness of the mortar joint
Area of Wall
Volume of Wall
Opening details
The volume of 1 brick [Brick should be standard size]
All the points should know before the calculate number of bricks.
Process of Calculate number of brick
Let us Consider some points
Length of a wall (L) = 10 meters
Height of a Wall (H) = 7 meters
Ratio of Mortar = 1:6
Standard size of 1 brick = (230 x 110 x 55)mm / (0.23 x 0.11 x 0.055)m
The thickness of mortar = 10 mm (in brick masonry work)
Size of 1 brick with mortar =(240 x 120 x 65)mm / (0.24 x 0.12 x 0.065)m
The thickness of the wall (t) = 230 mm
Solution,
Area of wall (A) = L x H =10 x 7 =70 sq m.
The Volume of Brick masonry Wall (V) = A x t=70 x 0.23=16.1 cub m.
The volume of 1 brick without mortar (V1) = 0.23 x 0.11 x 0.055 =0.0014 cub m.
The volume of 1 brick with mortar (V2) = 0.24 x 0.12 x 0.065 = 0.00187 cub m.
The formula for Number of Brick
Number of Brick= {Volume of brick wall / Volume of one brick}
According to the formula,
Number of Brick= {Volume of brick wall / Volume of one brick}
=16.1 / 0.00187
=8609.62 Nos
That is nearly equal to 8610 Nos.
We need to add 5 % to 6 % of the wastage of brick in the construction. So we should add 5 % of wastage brick.
Now,
Total Number of Brick = 8610 + 5 % of 8610
= 8610+ 430
=9040 Nos.
The total number of brick for (10 x 7 )m brick masonry wall require 9040 Nos. This is the actual number of bricks for assuming wall size.

Calculate Bricks in a wall in feet
Now Assume,
The length of a wall (L) = 20 ft.
The height of a Wall (H) = 20 ft.
The thickness of a wall (T) = 230 mm=0.754 ft
The thickness of mortar (t) = 10 mm= 0.032 ft.
The volume of a Wall (V) =20 x 20 x 0.754=301.6 cub ft.
Size of 1 Brick with mortar = (0.24 x 0.12 x 0.065)m = (0.787 x 0.393 x 0.213) ft.
The volume of 1 Brick with mortar = 0.787 x 0.393 x 0.213
= 0.0658 cub ft.
According to the formula,
Number of Brick= {Volume of brick wall / Volume of one brick}
=301.6 / 0.0658
=4583.58 Nos
That is nearly equal to 4584 Nos.
Adding 5% of wastage
Total number of brick = 4584 + 5% of 4584
= 4584+229.2
=4813.2
This is nearly equal to 4814 Nos.
So if you want to brick a masonry wall at 20 ft length, 20 ft height and 0.745 thickness 4814 Nos brick should be needed.
Some Important points
If the building wall has an opening schedule (Doors, Windows) subtract the volume of such opening space from the total volume of the wall and then calculate the number of bricks. The volume After subtracting opening space Shloud uses to calculate a number of bricks.
5% to 6% of wastage should be essential to add.
The mortar ratio should use 1:5 or 1:6.
Stander modular size of brick should be used.
