What is Slump Test and How to Perform it?

At some point, any construction project may require testing of the concrete being used. One such test is the slump test, which measures the consistency and workability of the concrete mixture.

What is the Slump Test?

The significance of the slump test cannot be overstated as it is critical in guaranteeing that the concrete utilized in construction is of the appropriate consistency and workability.

Unsuitable concrete, whether excessively rigid or excessively wet, can lead to difficulties during the construction phase and adversely impact the ultimate strength and longevity of the edifice.

By conducting a slump test, engineers and builders can calibrate the concrete amalgamation to satisfy the project’s predetermined requirements and specifications.

 

Importance of Slump Test

Required tools and equipment for a slump test

The following are the required tools and equipment for the slump test:

  1. Slump cone: This is a frustum-shaped cone made of steel or plastic, used to contain the fresh concrete during the test. It is usually about 30 cm in height with a top diameter of 10 cm and a bottom diameter of 20 cm.
  2. Tamping rod: This is a steel rod with a rounded tip, used to compact the concrete in the slump cone. It is usually 60 cm in length and 16 mm in diameter.
  3. Trowel: This is a flat steel blade with a handle, used to strike off the excess concrete level with the top of the cone. It is usually 15 cm in length and 10 cm in width.
  4. Ruler: This is a measuring instrument used to measure the slump of the concrete. It should be graduated in millimeters and be at least 300 mm in length.
  5. Stopwatch: This is used to measure the time it takes for the concrete to slump if required by the testing specifications.
  6. Water: This is used to wet the slump cone before the test and to add to the concrete mix if required.
  7. Scale: This is used to weigh the concrete mix before the test if required by the testing specifications.
  8. Clean containers: These are used to hold the concrete mix before the test and to collect the excess concrete after the test.
  9. Cleaning equipment: This includes a brush, a sponge, and a bucket of water, used to clean the tools and equipment after each test.
  10. Safety equipment: This includes gloves, safety glasses, and a dust mask, used to protect the tester from any potential hazards during the test.

These tools and equipment are essential for performing a slump test accurately and safely.

 

How to Perform the Slump Test?

Performing the slump test requires only a few simple steps:

Prepare the mold

To effectively carry out the slump test, it is recommended to employ a mold that satisfies the standardized cone dimensions. The mold ought to possess a 4-inch diameter at the top, an 8-inch diameter at the bottom, and a height of 12 inches. Place the mold on a level and smooth surface and apply a light coat of oil to deter the concrete from adhering to the mold.

 

Field the mold

Fill the mold with fresh concrete in three equal layers, tamping each layer with 25 strokes of a standard tamping rod to ensure proper compaction.

Remove the Mold

After the mold is filled, lift it slowly and carefully in a vertical motion. The concrete will slump or settle, and the amount of slump should be measured immediately using a measuring scale.

Record the Result

The outcome of the slump test should be documented in either millimeters or inches. Measure the slump by assessing the distance from the highest point of the slumped concrete to the top of the mold. If the slump exceeds the acceptable threshold, it may be necessary to alter the concrete mixture.

 

Here’s a brief description of how a slump test is typically performed:

  1. Start by cleaning the slump cone and wetting it with water.
  2. Place the cone on a level, flat surface and fill it with fresh concrete in three equal layers, compacting each layer with a tamping rod.
  3. After the final layer has been compacted, strike off the excess concrete level with the top of the cone using a trowel.
  4. Lift the cone vertically upward, taking care not to twist or jerk it, and place it next to the concrete.
  5. Use a ruler to measure the distance from the top of the cone to the highest point of the slumped concrete.
  6. Record this distance as the “slump” measurement.
  7. If the slump is less than the required value, the concrete may be too stiff and require more water or other additives to increase its workability.
  8. If the slump is greater than the required value, the concrete may be too wet and require less water or other additives to reduce its workability.
  9. Perform the slump test multiple times to ensure consistency and accuracy.
  10. Dispose of the concrete sample and clean the slump cone and tools thoroughly after each test.
